PHILIPP GEIST (DE)
TIME DRIFTS
OLDEHOOFSTERKERKHOF
The Berlin artist Philipp Geist works internationally on media video/light installation, photography and painting. For LUNA Nights, Philipp Geist is showing a light art installation at the Oldehoofsterkerkhof and the Oldehove that provides an interpretation of the concept of space and time. Words are projected onto the ground and the visitors, combined with floating geographic shapes that then disappear again in the mist. It thus portrays an elusiveness; of partial knowledge and understanding about life, past and present. The depth and three-dimensional rendering of this light artwork symbolizes the continuous development of space through continuous timelines and presents a complex network arising from the various spatial components that proliferate over time. This installation is part of a series called TIME DRIFTS. The work is made specifically for the location and has previously been shown in Berlin, Jerusalem, Frankfurt, Vancouver and Montreal, among others.
Geist’s projects are characterized by their complexity and the integration of location, sound and moving images. In his video-mapping installations, he avoids the use of canvases and turns diverse architecture into moving, painterly light sculptures, challenging the viewer’s perception of two- and three-dimensionality. In 2013, Geist received the German light design prize in the light art category for the installation Time Drifts. In 2014 he developed a video installation about the universally recognized statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and projected it on a large scale on the Santa Marta Favela and in December 2009 he showed a 4D mapping installation on the facade of the royal throne in Bangkok for occasion of King Bhumibol’s 82nd birthday.
